Malt Extract Agar is used for the cultivation of fungi and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. An acidic medium which will support the growth of most yeasts and molds whilst inhibiting most bacteria. It was first described by Thom and Church in 1926 in a study of Aspergillus spp. claiming the high carbohydrate content ensured rapid growth. Selectivity can be increased by further lowering the pH with the addition, after sterilization, of Lactic Acid (X037). It should be noted that excess heating of this medium together with its low pH can easily result in hydrolysis of the agar gel producing soft plates. Formula:Malt Extract - 30.0 g/LPeptone - 5.0 g/LAgar - 15.0 g/LFor more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/malt-extract-agar

m-Endo Agar is used for the enumeration of coliforms in water by the membrane filtration method in a laboratory setting. m-Endo Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. The coliform group, especially Escherichia coli, are used as indicators of fecal pollution in water, for assessing the effectiveness of water treatment and disinfection, and for monitoring water quality. m-Endo Agar is prepared according to the formula of McCarthy, Delaney, and Grasso, and used in testing water for coliforms by a two-step membrane filtration procedure. Lauryl Tryptose Broth is used as the preliminary enrichment, resulting in higher coliform counts. The American Public Health Association (APHA) recommends m-Endo Agar in standard total coliform membrane filtration procedure for testing water, wastewater, and foods. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/m-endo-agar

APT Agar is used for the cultivation of heterofermentative lactobacilli in a laboratory setting. APT Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Evans and Niven investigated the cultivation of heterofermentative lactobacilli, causing the faded or green discoloration of cured meat products. Deibel, Evans, and Niven tested thiamine-requiring bacteria, specifically Lactobacillus viridescens. Their formulations led to the development of APT Agar.Lactic acid bacteria, a group of acid-producing bacteria, include the genera Streptococcus, Leuconostoc, Pediococcus, and Lactobacillus. These organisms are widespread in nature, associated with bacterial spoilage of foods including dairy products, meat, and vegetables. APT Agar is used for cultivating heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria from food products. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/apt-agar

Mueller Hinton Agar I is used for antimicrobial sensitivity testing by the disc diffusion method and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.A medium for antimicrobial sensitivity testing by the disc diffusion method. This medium, used in the technique of Bauer and Kirby, has been adopted by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) in the USA as the definitive method for susceptibility testing. The medium has a very low thymine and thymidine content, making it suitable for trimethoprim and sulphonamide testing, controlled to ensure correct zone sizes with aminoglycoside and tetracyline antibiotics. The medium was originally formulated as a heat labile protein free medium for the isolation of pathogenic Neisseriaceae. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/mueller-hinton-agar-1

Sabouraud Dextrose Agar with Chloramphenicol is used for the selective isolation of fungi in a laboratory setting. Sabouraud Dextrose Agar with Chloramphenicol is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) is a modification of Dextrose Agar described by Sabouraud. Sabouraud Dextrose Agar is used for cultivating pathogenic and commensal fungi and yeasts. The high dextrose concentration and acidic pH of the formula permits selectivity of fungi. This medium is beneficial in sporulation studies and pigment production. Sabouraud Dextrose Agar is used for determining the microbial content of cosmetics and in the mycological evaluation of food. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/sabouraud-dextrose-agar-with-chloramphenicol

Bile Esculin Agar is used for the selective isolation and differentiation of group D streptococci from foods and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Bile Esculin Agar is based on the formulation described by Swan and further evaluated by Facklam and Moody. Rochaix first noted the value of esculin hydrolysis in the identification of enterococcci. Meyer and Schonfeld added bile to the esculin medium and demonstrated 61 of 62 enterococci strains were able to grow and hydrolyze esculin, while other streptococci could not.Molecular taxonomic studies of the genus Streptococcus have placed enterococci, previously described as group D streptococci, in the genus Enterococcus. The ability to hydrolyze esculin in the presence of bile is a characteristic of enterococci and group D streptococci. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/bile-esculin-agar

Bile Esculin Azide Agar is used for the selective isolation and differentiation of group D streptococci in a laboratory setting. Bile Esculin Azide Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Bile Esculin Azide Agar is a modification of the medium reported by Isenberg and Isenberg, Goldberg, and Sampson. This formula modifies Bile Esculin Agar by adding sodium azide and reducing the concentration of bile. The revised medium is more selective, but still provides rapid growth and efficient recovery of group D streptococci.Molecular taxonomic studies of the genus Streptococcus have placed enterococci, previously described group D streptococci, in the genus Enterococcus. The ability to hydrolyze esculin in the presence of bile is a characteristic of enterococci and group D streptococci. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/bile-esculin-azide-agar
